Bajirao - Mastani Preview (Aka Bhansalis 'Bajirao Bhankasam')

Mee Bajirao boltoy....Shrimant Bajirao Ballal Bhat urf Pehile Bajirao Peshawe. Mala 300 warshannatar swargatun parat yeun bhashya karnyasarakhe karan ghadale - Itihaasat 250 warshanpurvi ek totaya peshwa houn gela. Pan tumchya mumbaitil mayanagari madhe ajun ek totya peshwa ghadawtana and 'Nat-tana and Nach-tana' baghun rahawale nahi ani mhanun ha shabda prapanch. Ani Maharashtratilch navhe tar Bharatamadhil saglya prajela samjel 'ashya bhashet' ithun puthe ani thodkyat....

- I was appointed as Peshwa at the age of 20 and I served the position for 20 years till my death (aged 40)
- So I am known as one of the best battlefield experts in the history of India
- Yes I fought 11 big battles (41 in total) in the span of 20 years and won all of those and defeated the unconquered Supreme Mughal Emperors in most of these battles.
- Incidentally I was instrumental in expanding the Marathi Empire beyond Maharashtra, India upto the borders of Afghanistan (Attock)
- And I volunteered to become a warrior, became a battlefield expert while I was appointed as a Pradhan (Prime Minister) wherein not only by the bestowed duties but also by caste, I was supposed to be only performing rituals in the safe and leisurely confines of temples and homes etc.

So while I was on the mission to expand the empire and was 'out on the road' almost through-out the year, do you 'guys' have any idea, how the life was for me? I am known for having my meals while riding on the back of my horse!! Reason - I couldn't afford to lose time (I know you guys have your fast foods while driving the 'mechanised horses' these days... but it was different and difficult back then, when our LIFE was at stake every moment and the mission was not about delivering a packet, a pizza, a software, a report, or a movie like this-one being attempted on me?) So while the time was so 'crunch' and deliveries having a very 'tight schedule'; can you imagine me behaving in a way like 'walking on a ramp, shaking the booty, dancing with my military troop, and using words like 'wat lavli' while worshiping deities like 'Malhari'? Totally insane, ISN'T IT? Also BTW I heard from the 'public' that this 'masterpeice of a song - Malhari' is actually stolen from the forthcoming ABCD 3 (on the lines of 'Hey Ganaraya') !!

I heard there is already a lot being written about the two songs 'Pinga' and 'Mastaani' in the so called movie made on me. I don't want to comment more on that. But it hurts even for a DEAD MAN and for someone at the stature of BAJIRAO PESHWA - Because you are abusing, diluting and ill-baselining the great personalities and events in the History. Continuing the same thread from above, my mission always was to expand the Marathi Empire, not with the intent to build lavish palaces and gardens in Pune or Maharashtra, where I can leisurely spend my 'vacations' amongst many of my Queens, Mistresses, Courtesans, in-short 'Girl Friends' (like shown in the movie). I was never self-indulged like Romans, Mughals and Brits and most of the other Emperors in the History, but lived a modest life, even after being conferred as 'Hindu Pad Padshaha'.

About the romantic scenes between the male lead and the two female leads (actually the 3 'models', as can't call them Bajiro, Kashibai or Mastani). Would Bhansali like a biopic on HIMSELF when his father and mother (being played by say - Ranveer again as he is the superstar of fake biopics, and Sunny Leone - just taking cinematic liberty) are shown enacting how Sanju-baba was born? I mean enacting how they are 'doing things' creatively to emphasize why Mr. Bhansali is so talented, and can create movies having full of Cinematic Liberty.... Not right, isn't it? - Because the romance between them and also the Historic figures has to be behind the walls and not to be portrayed in public - Off course even if it's a reality.

Now coming back to the movie called Bajirao Mastani made by Mr. Bhansali. So I'd first congratulate Mr. Bhansali for innovating a new genre in the history of movies, called as 'Fi-Hi - Ficton History' :-) Non-realistic fairy taleish (or vampire taleish?) very loosely based on the Historical characters with the intent to make cheap quick money. I'd rather regard the movie as 'Bajirao Sanjay Leela Mastani Bhansali' where Bajirao is Mr. Sanjay Bhansali's Mansaputra / Mind-son and rest all the other family members in the Bhansali family. Or like i mentioned in the beginning, this is for the second time a fake Peshwa has returned from the battle of Panipat. And this time definitely a fake one without even needing any experts to test his purity / originality.

My concluding thoughts: I just hope (As I can't warrant in this era of Hit -and- Run -and- Escape -and- Honor) for 2 things:
1. Mr. Bhansali should sincerely apologies and also put a readable text, which will appear before the Titles, and will also show up across the length of the movie on the screen stating 'This is a work of GRAND FICTION and if there is any relevance to any living or dead, please consider it to be a GRAND MISTAKE and not just a coincidence'.
2. One of these like an Ashutosh Gowarikar or a Subodh Bhave or a Nachiket and Jayoo Patwardhan (or their next-gens - '22 June 1897' fame) get an inspiration after knowing (I am sure they wont't even watch this) about this fake movie, and make a movie titled 'Bajirao - Sikandar of India' OR 'Ajinkya Bajirao' etc. which will amplify my real credits to the Indian History than very trivial personal aspects of mine or anyone's life.

If you have a lot of free time!! on 18 December / next weekend, and if you dare to watch, you can watch 'Dilwale' :-). But instead IMHO watch a DVD of a Sholay, a Home Alone, An Oceans -if you are a big movie buff, and if you can't step out for a jog, a trek or a game of shuttle etc.

My First - ( unofficial) Half Marathon 7 Nov 15

This Morning - Hit the most illusive 21K in 2hr 55 minutes:-) - it was unofficial though - not at any event but just on my own. Was so excited that got up just a minute before the alarm went off @4.40 am. Was out by 5.20 and hit the road @5.25, completed @8.20 hushhhhh!!!

 Unusually hot for November - 22 deg celc @ 6 am!!😡

The last 5K was really a stretch taking 50 minutes..:-) Consumed @500+ ml water between 13-21 K. Non stop, no snacking during the run. Though some dry fruits immediately after coming to halt...which i was carrying. Very difficult walking back home after the run and even more taxing doing post run stretching. Ligaments behind knee, and calves got hit the most and the lower back as well :(. Stretching helped tremendously though :-). Also so fatigued that didn't want to think, write and post this, thruout the day. Had 1 hour sleep in the afternoon. Also made sure that stepping out in the noon to activate legs which have become too numb!!!!:-) And 2-3/times lime + salt + sugar water during the day to avoid any cramps etc...

- 6k to 21K just under 4 weeks (11 Oct - 7 Nov)
- 12 days of actual run
- ~120 K run till date
-  This week 43 K
-  7 times 10+ K runs
-  Average 10k / day
-  6 6 6 10 6 10 10 6 16 10 12 21 (12 days run)
- Lost 3 KGs in last month, not at all great....
-  Also couldn't have been on my usual diet (in fact a bit depleted) for last 2-3 months

After the run, i was felling like wearing a mud face pack ;) - not exactly but to some extent, smoke + sweat + dust even with a very less morning traffic!!

Having a weird feeling after achieving this - cant explain... May need to consider some other targets..but it can't be a full marathon... In fact 3 hours on road was too much of a stretch, and not too sure if I should continue..... But definitely want to run 1 official half marathon - Most likely on 6 Dec, the Pune marathon :-)

Cineblog: Katyar Kaljat Ghusli (The Movie)

2015 Diwali,  though I was celebrating the 'non NRI Diwali' :-) after two long years, more than the Diwali faral and sweets (no crackers this time), I was more eager to celebrate two events 1) Zinnia's 9th birthday which was incidentally falling on Diwali Padwa and 2) screening of much awaited movie 'Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli'. These 3 words ; the play itself; the songs and music; and actors associated with it have a special place in the memory lane. Flash back..Sometime in 80s, a young kid ignorant of Indian Classical music, coincidentally came across this play on a Sunday evening on Doordarshan, which changes…or perhaps cornerstones his views on dramas/ plays, song and music. As he was unaware, it created an innate reckoning about all this for him to cherish for the lifetime…. The impact made by Khansaheb  (was that a Character or Doctor Deshpande almost lived Khansaheb? ) is so deep-rooted that 'Soorat Piyan kI' and 'Ghei Chaand Makarand' songs were the chosen companions, of the same and now grown up kid, in the few months of ghostly stay, at 'Bromley' during H1 2015.

I wasn’t aware till a few months back that the songs which I'm listening to almost daily during H1 2015 are actually getting rehashed on a bigger canvas on celluloid. So when I got to know about the same a couple months back I was super excited and was very eager to watch the movie - Not to mention the poster, promos and the songs released before the movie have added to my anxiety……Well I'll stop referencing me, but that’s how this is a Cineblog and not just a Cinesketch or a Cinebits (my other 2 categories of plain vanilla reviews.

The movie is told in a bit different way, like how a movie is supposed to be told, a bit different than the drama. It has got all the essence of new age Marathi cinema - the grandeur (which is apt and not mind boggling), the period costumes, leveraging some of the best musicians in the industry (Trio of Shankar-Ehsan-Loy), Maestro like Sachin (the Marathi acting maestro, not the one on the 22 yards :-)) and few other stalwarts like Subodh himself and Sahnkar Mahadevan in the lead roles.  The concept of narrative by the Katyar itself / herself is excellent, full marks to Subodh Bhave (the director) or the Production designers. My only take is if it could have been a bit younger and a lot more sharper voice than Reema Lagu it would have been more appealing…(but just my view)

The movie scores on all fronts, well almost all. Full marks to the casting director. Sachin is born for the role and like I mentioned earlier, this would fetch him multiple awards.. I'd like to see him making big at the international levels (my hunch is UK based British Raj kind of projects…) when it comes to portraying these Urdu speaking characters…but why just that, in fact any other magnificent character and he would make it a masterpiece. He and Doctor Vasantrao Dshapnde will be always remembered for their Khansaheb portrayal, I still like the Doctor's more, as it was a bit less filmy. However Sachin looks more convincing and original vocalist than what Shankar is doing on the screen. BTW Shankar has given all he could to the character of Punditji and full marks to him considering his first mainstream acting attempt. Though I would have liked to have a seasoned actor portraying this. Subodh Bhave's character spans during the second half mainly, but he gets all the limelight through portrayal of Sadashiv - He has given a magnificent performance while maintaining the subtlety…  Amrita Khanwilkar, Mrinmayee Deshpande and  Pushkar Shrotri all have played theirs to perfections. Duo of Chand & Usman, don’t have much to play as compared to the original drama, and they probably couldn’t even made it memorable.

Subodh and the producers have definitely played an anchors role to unravel the masterpiece on the screen and did it keeping the originality of the drama. Some scenes, like the one where Sadashiv (Subodh) and Zareena (Amrita) were lighting the diyas - is a landmark in Marathi movie and also the other scenes during the Qawwali and at the climax are great showman skills by Subodh.

Music for this genre was a huge testimony and the Trio has crafted it beyond perfection - For the new generation, they may not be able to differentiate between which ones are by Abhishekibua and which ones are by the Trio. However during couple of songs like Ghei Chaand and Surat Piya Ki (or another one) a visual display of Mridingam (while I suppose Tabla is played in the background, and which is more apt as well) is a bit unsettling (Is there any other percussion instrument used other than Tabla in the Original Katyar…. I guess not)

Costumes are great - I heard for the first time in Marathi movie they introduced a costume consultant in addition to the designer, and Nachiket Barve has opened a plethora of opportunities for him....and  I am sure he would go places beyond Bollywood, typically for the period movies.

Cant conclude without referencing splendid performances which makes this Katyar the Katyar  - Vocalist Rahul Deshpande, Shankar Mahadevan and Mahesh Kale have given the millennials (Gen X) the heartthrob of classical and musical 80's in a new age Dolby Digital format… And did I say remix?…well yes remix without even a feel of remix, by not killing the rhythm, melody, content, simplicity and the soul of the music.

It'll be a great commercials success, Sachin to grab quite a few awards including a National Award and should be able to launch himself in an international project, the movie is capable of winning a few awards as well. Sincerely wishing that Subodh will be enticed by many such subjects like Balgandharva, Lokmanya, Katyar etc. and will lead the way of period movies and biopics taking MArathi movies beyond the regional /national boundaries.

Cant help but conclude in Marathi - Before stepping inside the the movie hall, I was wondering… Katyar ajun khol rutnar ki unmalun padnar…. But it lived beyond expectations giving an awesome feeling as the 'Katyar fakta ghusali nahi tar shekdo rasikanchya manat kayamachi ghatta rutun basnar…

CineSketches_Th Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Size and Scale:
'Check-in' to a nearby movie hall while you pay for friends and even for extended family :-)! Home collection too! 10 on 10!

CineScope:
This is a sequel to the first part, and boy this has probably shades (not grey ;)) better than the first one.  All the 'characters' from the first part with the same 'whim' are striving in a quest to build the second hotel to expand the legacy of the Exotic Marigold Hotel. It becomes more glamorous with a notable addition of Richard Gere as Mr. Guy Chambers.
The canvas appears small but is actually very intrinsic, sketched with multi-layered human relations and interactions.  Even though most of it is predictable, the beauty is to see it becoming live on the screen with amazing script, dialogues, acting and direction. The background music adds to the soothing nature of the movie with a splash of popular Bollywood dance numbers and some Hindustani classical as well.

BFB (Bang For the Buck):
An epitome of British humor, with splendid US charm, and loads of Indian spices coming together in our own beautiful Jaipur. Distinctly strong, determined, at the same time humorous characters played by stalwarts Judi Dench (the M in 007 movies we know of), Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy (has huge resemblance with Dev Anand), Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Richard Gere and Tina Desai.

My High!
1. Dev Patel: What a performance at such a young age - his looks, Indian English accent, bit of slapstick nature of the comedy, facial expressions... he'll go a long way.

2. Lillete Dubey: The portrayal of stern Mrs. Kapoor was just outstanding. The way she shares screen space with the likes of 'larger than life' Richard Gere is a treat to watch. Nowhere she appears less glamorous, or less confident than Mr. Gere.  I've been following her performances since 'Monsoon Wedding' (2001) and those have always been excelling.  And she looks so gorgeous as she has almost defied the age.

3. The plot also has resemblance a bit with a Marathi play 'Alibaba and Chalishitale Chor'. This movie can be 'Alibaba and Satarritale Chor (Alibaba and the 'Teens' in their 70s). A beautiful and touching moment in the movie - when Judi Dench tells her driver she needs some more time to say 'Yes' to Bill Nighy, and the driver asks 'do you have time madam?' - Be it a teenager or someone as old as her, just the sheer optimism towards life (being alive), and at the same time hesitance about committing to a relation at that older age endorses an unique human psyche.

ScreenEsha Speaks:
Quite a few BAFTA and OSCAR nominations, with hoping to have as many awards :-)
  1. Dev Patel: Best Actor in Lead Role(Male)
  2. Maggie Smith: Best Supporting Actor (Female)
  3. Best Story
  4. Best Screenplay
  5. Best Casting
  6. Best Director
  7. Best Movie
