Cinebits_A True Tribute to the Women's Day - Queen and Gulaab Gang

Got to watch 2 rock-solid performances over last 2 days !!

A performance coming from an actress who is known for doing ‘cutie-pie’ / ‘goodie-goodie’ roles for last 30+ years, now played an outrageously cunning villain and delivered an award winning performance. Yep – Juhi Chawla from days of Sultanat and QSQT to ‘Son of Sardar’ has finally delivered a performance of lifetime in ‘Gullab gang’. Her expressions / dialogue delivery is completely opposite to what she is known for all this while. Feels like she has arrived and even outperformed Madhuri in this movie. While Madhuri and the movie are definitely good, but it’d be remembered for ‘Sumitra’ the character performed by Juhi -Just outstanding.

Another actress who was almost written off (at least from acting prowess standpoint) has proved everyone wrong. Absolutely amazing performance by Kangana Ranawat in ‘Queen’. After doing the psycho roles (regardless of the role the act was more of psycho) in most of her movies close to a decade, she has shown very different (than her usual) and true to the character expressions in this movie. But it’s not just expressions, the overall feel of the character is almost worn and carried stunningly. Interesting to see what roles Kangana accepts after this and how the directors would be leveraging the talent which was hidden all this while.

I was talking to a friend earlier this week of me eagerly waiting for Gulaab Gang for Juhi (Nope, not for Madhuri, even bring an ardent fan of hers) and when I got to see the promo of ‘Queen’ also mentioned about it being a ‘Must Watch’. However wasn’t too confident about Kangana’s performance and rated Juhi’s role as top 10 all time great female performances of Bollywood. But after watching Queen, Kangana can definitely be included in the top 10 list.

Also to highlight both are debutant directors, while Soumik Sen of Gulaab Gang has done a great job (aside the titles were amazing as well), Vikas Behl surpasses most of the Bollywood debutant performances till date and delivered a masterpiece. He has keenly captured every small nuance of life beautifully- it directly touches your heart. Both movies could have been a little shorter though, and songs could have been cut down in both.

While Gulaab Gang is vocal about the women rights and kind of does some explicit preaching on the subject, Queen says all about women liberation etc. w/o even subtly mentioning the same.

Queen a Must Watch for the ladies and gentleman. Can be best enjoyed in separate groups :-)  Also highly recommended for a home DVD collection – I’m sure it’d be made part of the syllabus at many movie courses.

Yo Sunday Brunch 2 - Future Technologies: Peeping though the Windows and Droids :*: :*:

Couple weeks back, we looked at the bright future of the Marathi cinema in coming years and how it’s attracting talent at the national level, and scaling new heights at the Box Office (Did Natsamrat made the illusive INR 50 CRs at the BO?), today we’ll take a sneak peek at the future of technology. And this is not based on any promos ;) or through any media channels, but probably the so called ‘Brain child’ of the ‘First Person Singular’ J. And while these thoughts were hovering for last year+, last mornings article about Zinnia blossoming in the space and related references in the article (newspaper) must have triggered and compelled me to actually write about those techy ;) thoughts in my mind. And Ohh NO!! These are not yet patented yet J L

Personal Drones:
So in 5-8 years from now, most of the cell phones will have multiple accessories or will be connected with lots of wearable’s like the hi-tech goggles (Google Glass), clothes, health monitoring gadgets etc. But most cell phones would also have a key accessory in the form of a personalized tiny drone. Drones will be connected with cell phones, hi-tech goggles etc. and primarily function as a remote camera for the phone. And later those will evolve to become persona pets of various shapes, size and colors with very peculiar characteristics. Essentially will be a combination of a low-end robot and minuscule drone. How about having a drone mimicking a Dalmatian wagging its tail or a white Siamese cat yawning in your lap, jumping around you, playing with you and you don’t have to bother about feeding, cleaning it! Hmmm but wait, can’t skip the charging though L till it becomes so intelligent to start charging itself.

GloCal Tourism:
While London boasts about it's Tube and it’s undoubtedly one of the best although busiest public transport services in the world, I actually had to ‘Mind the Gaps J with respect to the tube Service’, especially during the days of strike called by the tube workers, and believe me I came across that situation multiple times during the couple years I was staying in London making me change my commute plans at several occasions. Also I was fortunate to visit Paris just a few months prior to the coward attacks in early 2015. A very close friend of mine was in Paris while it was under attack, as he was visiting it unfortunately just for those 2 days. So even though I love to travel and visit places, understand different cultures, food (Veg – yes lots you can explore J)  and know more about the people characteristics in that area, somehow always get constrained due to time, ever increasing costs, coordination hassles and also the anxiety about everything like travel tickets, hotel bookings, weather, local disruptions at the intended places of travel etc.

I have been thinking over it for last 1+ year and visualizing couple of new lines of business. One of those and at the extreme end of the spectrum, someone like a Disney or alike, can make huge investments, to build large theme parks wherein places across the world are recreated and you can touch and feel small replicas of  Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Egypt, Leaning tower of Pisa along with respective natural habitats, the climate, the food and people from those areas. So if you buy a ‘hoppers pass’ for 5 days in a summer vacation, you can visit 10-12 different places at the theme park spending probably half a day at Taj Mahal enjoying the Chats and Jalebi and remaining half day in Venice listening to the ‘Venetian Gondola Songs’ amidst bunch of roses, glass of Champagne and cheese, or or even better in snow peaked Alps in the winter gears rented by you for those 3-4 hours. Interesting??

While above requires a mammoth of an investment and also could be a bit/lot expensive and time consuming (still? – YES!!) affair as a tourist, for the T20/ ‘Appletic’ generation (I just coined it :-)), the more affordable and quicker option would be the multiplexes devoted to tourism. There will be shows on chopper ride at Grand Canyons, or snorkeling in the blue lagoons and carol islands for the vibrant and colorful under water life in Pacific and Indian Ocean. Well it will be brought to you most likely through the Imax shows or the Virtual Reality (VR) shows with bunch of Dimensions (6Ds / 7Ds…J). I mean with VR you may even get to experience the space travel and near weightlessness moments. 'Sony Studios' / 'Travel Channel' - are you reading / listening / working on this already? :-) And while getting out of the multiplex you can keep on collecting the fridge magnets for the destinations you haven’t visited and probably not visiting in near future, convenient? huhhh !!!

And I don't intend to say that the actual tourism will be impacted, these could be just the new 'ways' to visit places.

Conglomerates? Those are too Small and will be a passe– The time is for Nebulous Organizations ruling the world:
The last one is pretty interesting, and probably really vague - too commercial and distant even as a concept! But… I’m visualizing Alphabet (Google parent organization)  as one organization ruling the world in next 10-15 years – Be it the largest internet service provider, home automation, automobiles to the electronic devices and OSs and more importantly custodians to the gigantic data about every single person (well almost!) right from, which tooth paste s/he uses to which seat in the flight s/he prefers to how much the person is spending every day on the cup of coffee at nearby Starbucks or Costa. Hmmmm, while many will resonate with some of these thoughts, I’d further imagine if Alphabet owns 1) a large financial organization (typically Credit Card arm) and 2) Mobile service Provider, they will completely rule the world, and yes in every sense. Sounds scary but the amount of data they already have about each of us, it’s already enough scary. And I could see there will be more means of capitalizing on that, to the extent that Alphabet would even defunct Credit Card as a concept and would replace that in the SIM card in the mobile where the instrument, the OS, and the network service (internet based) provided by them and the instrument can even come for free, at the cost of …. You know it!!! Sounds like a story-line of any quintessential Hollywood flick, where Americans are utterly paranoid of these things and always want to fight (obviously to win!! J) against an evil super power. But Alphabet appears to be damn capable of ruling at least 15-20% of the World economy in next couple of decades, and obviously to grow even further.

Was that too heavy, head spinning?…I guess so J.  Let’s come back to reality, its already 6th week of 2016 and we haven’t even acted on the usual resolution we make at every year-end. Grab your sport shoes, tracks and hit the road / gym to sweat it out and get into that lean look you have been wanting to have, and for the healthy you. ‘Just Do It because Impossible Is Nothing’ – Show these are not just the tag lines but you actually mean it J

Have a great week ahead!
